Therapy for Aphasia & Brain Injury
By age 4 a child is expected to be understandable to others 90% of the time. There are different reasons why some children have trouble with speaking clearly. Difficulties with speaking clearly and not being understood can leave a child feeling frustrated and impact on their self confidence. A Speech-language pathologist will start by conducting a speech evaluation to better understand the nature of the child's speech difficulty and develop an individualized treatment plan. Parent education and training is provided to ensure maximal support at home and to facilitate faster progress.
Reading & Literacy
Children who begin speaking late may continue to lag behind their peers in language and be at greater risk for academic and reading difficulties once they start school. Challenges with reading are also fairly common among children with average language skills. Difficulty with decoding and reading comprehension impacts on a child's ability understand the school curriculum as well as their performance on written tests and assignments.

Unclear Speech
Our speech therapists treat a variety of speech difficulties including articulation difficulties, unclear speech, phonology, apraxia and motor speech disorders.
A strong accent in any language can be confusing or distracting to an unfamiliar listener. Accent related speech differences stem a variety
of factors including consonant and vowel differences, consonant omissions, sound substitutions and differences in syllable and word stress, prosody and intonation. Individuals who seek accent reduction therapy often report that they are not always understood or that they lack confidence when communicating at work.
Nexus Therapy provides individually tailored accent reduction therapy programs for adults to empower your communication skills. Therapy conveniently takes place in the comfort of your home or on-site in the workplace in locations across British Columbia including downtown Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster and Delta. Our therapists will develop a customized program to help you speak with greater clarity and confidence. Accent reduction therapy when provided through a registered Speech Language Pathologist is generally covered under most private health insurance plans that cover speech therapy.
How it Works
We provide a comprehensive needs assessment and customize your therapy program to best meet the unique needs of each individual. Accent reduction therapy starts with an initial assessment where a registered speech-language therapist will conduct an evaluation to identify accent related speech differences and other communication concerns that can be targeted in therapy.
Pronunciation is quite simply, a component of language learning that can be enhanced or altered if desired. Our accent reduction programs help clients “unlearn” old established pronunciation patterns and “relearn” new and accurate ways of pronouncing Canadian English. During accent reduction or accent modification therapy, the individual will be taught how to use their tongue, lips, vocal cords and jaw to produce the sounds and sound sequences used in Canadian English as well to understand differences in syllable and word stress, prosody and intonation.
Our individually tailored programs assists professionals who speak English as a second language to speak clearly by correctly producing the speech sounds and stress patterns of either language. The purpose of accent reduction is not to eliminate an accent but rather to be clearly understood and more confident when speaking.
Why choosing the right Speech-Language Pathologist is so Important
For accent modification therapy to be effective, it is essential to receive treatment from an experienced and trained speech-language pathology professional who is sensitive to the obvious and subtle differences that are unique to your first language/dialect and accent. Individuals who speak the same first language do not necessarily have the exact same accent. Our Speech Language Pathologists have the enhanced clinical training necessary to offer effective accent modification training with audibly noticeable results.
Improved speech clarity and pronunciation skills result in:
Increased productivity
Speech that is easily understood by others
Confidence in speaking
Increased understanding of conversational English
Improved levels of customer/client satisfaction
Effective and efficient teamwork
Fewer miscommunications and misunderstandings
Employee retention
Advancement in the workplace
