Therapy for Aphasia & Brain Injury
By age 4 a child is expected to be understandable to others 90% of the time. There are different reasons why some children have trouble with speaking clearly. Difficulties with speaking clearly and not being understood can leave a child feeling frustrated and impact on their self confidence. A Speech-language pathologist will start by conducting a speech evaluation to better understand the nature of the child's speech difficulty and develop an individualized treatment plan. Parent education and training is provided to ensure maximal support at home and to facilitate faster progress.
Reading & Literacy
Children who begin speaking late may continue to lag behind their peers in language and be at greater risk for academic and reading difficulties once they start school. Challenges with reading are also fairly common among children with average language skills. Speech Therapy for Receptive Language Delay
A receptive language delay refers to difficulties with understanding spoken language. Receptive language difficulties can manifest in a variety of forms including: difficulties with understanding spoken words, phrases, sentences, or figurative language. Such difficulties can lead a child or individual to have difficulty following spoken directions, understanding questions, understanding answers to questions, understanding stories or understanding spoken discourse within the home or classroom setting. A child who is struggling with the receptive language expectations for their age can be expected to have difficulty with learning and understanding information in the school setting. Difficulties with receptive language can also be expected to impact on a student's academic performance.
A Speech-Language Pathologist can pin point the nature of a child's receptive language difficulties through the process of an evaluation. When receptive language difficulties are identified, the Speech Therapist will be able to develop a treatment plan that will help target receptive language skills that are appropriate to the age and needs of the client. To facilitate progress in therapy, recommendations to assist with receptive language development within the home and school setting will be provided by the treating Speech Language Pathologist.
