Therapy for Aphasia & Brain Injury
By age 4 a child is expected to be understandable to others 90% of the time. There are different reasons why some children have trouble with speaking clearly. Difficulties with speaking clearly and not being understood can leave a child feeling frustrated and impact on their self confidence. A Speech-language pathologist will start by conducting a speech evaluation to better understand the nature of the child's speech difficulty and develop an individualized treatment plan. Parent education and training is provided to ensure maximal support at home and to facilitate faster progress.
Reading & Literacy
Children who begin speaking late may continue to lag behind their peers in language and be at greater risk for academic and reading difficulties once they start school. Challenges with reading are also fairly common among children with average language skills. Difficulty with decoding and reading comprehension impacts on a child's ability understand the school curriculum as well as their performance on written tests and assignments.

Nexus Therapy is a regular corporate donor to the UNHCR; the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and the IDRF; the
International Development Relief Foundation; a Canadian registered charitable organization dedicated to empowering the disadvantaged
people of the world through the provision of effective humanitarian aid and sustainable development programs, without discrimination,
based on the principles of human dignity, self-reliance, and social justice.
In 2017 Nexus Therapy contributed to the following UNHCR and IDRF emergency and relief initiatives:
South Sudan
Life-saving supplies including blankets, clean water and sturdy tents
to desperate children and families in need.
The South Sudan situation is Africa’s largest displacement crisis
today. With the conflict in South Sudan now entering its fourth
year, its people are facing dire humanitarian challenges. By the
end of October 2016, more than 1.2 million South Sudanese had
fled as refugees to CAR, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda,
while within the country almost 1.8 million people had become
internally displaced and 6.1 million were estimated to be in need
of urgent humanitarian assistance.
Disease, protracted instability, the escalation of violence, and wide-
spread destruction have triggered unprecedented levels of food
insecurity. More than 4.8 million people, half the population, became
severely food insecure due to simply being unable to bring in the
harvest. The economic situation continues to worsen with hyper-
inflation at record levels of more than 800%. With a paucity of
national infrastructure such as roads or viable airfields, as well
as the long rainy season of up to eight months per year, South
Sudan is one of the most logistically challenging countries in the
world in which to operate, and thus in which to bring assistance to
those in need.
East Africa Famine Appeal
Famine Relief
Severe drought and famine has caused a humanitarian crisis of
frightening proportions. Across South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen,
Ethiopia and Kenya, more than 20 million people suffer the brunt
of famine. Due to months-long and widespread drought across
the region, a surge in volatile conflict erupted across the region,
causing unprecedented food insecurity and mass displacement.
With nothing to eat, and nowhere to go, families are dying of
starvation. Families are being forced to travel hundreds of kilometres
from as far as neighbouring Ethiopia to get water for themselves and
their livestock, because of the lack of water in the region. The water
has turned green and is now very low. Their needs are urgent and
simple –food, water, sanitation.
Warmth to Syrian Refugees In Lebanon
Winter Survival Fund: Life-saving shelter materials like heating and
fuel, floor mats, insulation and sturdy tents to children and families
in need.
As temperatures plummet across the Middle East, refugee families
are not prepared for the freezing snow, rain and wind. Families
forced to flee Syria in fear for their lives are facing another long
winter away from home. They are living in camps, settlements, or
cities without the supplies they need to survive through sub-zero
temperatures. We are supplying refugees with the basic necessities
they need to get through the winter—such as warm clothing, insulation
kits, thermal sleeping bags and fuel vouchers. Giving to the Winter
Survival Fund provides refugees with the protection they need.
Rohingya Refugees
UNHCR is concerned at the growing number of people resorting
to desperate means to flee Myanmar. More than 30 makeshift
rafts carrying over 1,000 Rohingya refugees have arrived in
Bangladesh in the past 10 days and UNHCR, the UN Refugee
Agency, says it is concerned at the growing number of people
resorting to desperate means to flee Myanmar.
“More than 200 Rohingya refugees are known to have drowned
in shipwrecks and boat incidents, with an estimated 620,000
Rohingya refugees have fled to Bangladesh since the start of the
crisis on 25 August, 2017. Despite efforts to provide more aid and
services, overcrowding and difficult living conditions in the camps
and makeshift sites increased health, sanitation and fire risks, as
well as violence and trafficking.
So far, UNHCR has delivered hundreds of thousands of aid items
including tents, plastic sheeting, blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito
nets, kitchen sets, buckets and jerrycans.
